Recruit Process

  1. Recruit will start by coming to trainings.
  2. An application, Background Check Release, Driving Record Release and copy of this process, will be given to Recruit at first training (if has not received already).
  3. Application needs to be turned into the Volunteer Development Officer, Chief or a Deputy Chief by the second training.
  4. An interview will be scheduled the night of Recruits third training when possible. Trainings include Recruit Classes when available.
  5. At the completion of the interview, the interviewers will advise the Recruit that he/she will be contacted by the Chief or a Deputy Chief as to the acceptance or declination of his/her application no later than the next training date. The Recruit will also be given a physical form and advised to hold onto it until they have heard of acceptance of their application.
  6. Recruit is not eligible to participate in trainings and is not allowed, per district policy, to ride in Department vehicles until their application has been officially accepted.
  7. Recruit must have passed physical and have paperwork turned in to the Volunteer Development Officer, Chief, or a Deputy Chief prior to participating in trainings.
  8. Recruits are to continue to come to regular scheduled trainings while they are completing the Recruit Classes.
  9. Recruit Classes will be held at the discretion of the Volunteer Development Officer
  10. Recruits can use the provided Recruit turnouts at station #1 for trainings. Gear will not be issued until Recruit has completed the Recruit Classes and has passed the physical. This includes T-shirts and hats.
  11. Once the Recruit has completed the Recruit Classes and has been issued gear they will be able to start responding to calls and “helping” at scenes. During the first 6 months the Recruit must respond to their designated station and travel to the scene with an experienced Firefighter/EMT. They may not respond directly to a scene.
  12. Any time during the Recruit process a Recruit can take EVAP and/or HAZMAT classes when available. This excludes Firefighter-Minors from taking EVAP due to Firefighters are unable to drive district vehicles until they are 18 years of age.
  13. Other outside classes such as North Idaho Mini-Recruit Class, Rope Rescue, and Ice Rescue, you must have completed our Recruit Classes and have been issued gear prior to attending these classes.
  14. EMT and Region 9 Recruit Classes, Recruits must have completed our Recruit Classes and been issued gear prior to attending these classes. In addition the Department will not pay for the classes until the Recruit has been an Active Volunteer with the Department for one year. A Recruit may take these classes with approval from the Medical Officer or Chief (whichever is applicable) prior to completing the first full year if they pay for the class on their own. The Recruit will then be reimbursed for the class once they have been a participating member for one full year.
  15. There will be a one year probationary period for all Recruits. During this time a Recruit may be dismissed from the Department if their driving record or background check are not up to department requirements, they do not pass their physical or if for any reason the Officers feel that the Recruit is substandard.
  16. Should a Recruit or Active Firefighter be dismissed or leave the Department voluntarily, all Department issued gear must be turned into the Personal Equipment Officer. This includes turnouts, T-shirts, hats, license plates, etc.
